PRACTICE YOUR PUTTING
Putting: I hear so many people’s ideas about putting that it wouldn’t leave me any space if I wrote them all down here. However, this one I rarely hear anyone talk about and it is essential that you do it. You must stand still as you putt. Believe it or not, a putter has about 5° of loft, which is there for a purpose. If your body moves, so many things can go wrong.
Remember: All the things you know about the long game, including long-iron shots and rescue clubs, make up only about 50% of the game. The other 50% is short game, including putting, and the mental side of golf.
The left-side brain profession: Engineers, doctors and accountants, tend to spend too much time working on the mechanics, and not enough time picturing where to hit the ball. Learn to play by feel. When you are practicing, be theoretical. Spend time at the end of your practice though, picturing your golf shots.
I often see people practice who never look at the target. They are preoccupied with working on the mechanical parts of the swing. Imagine playing the piano while thinking about where your fingers should be. Initially, you need to read the music. Imagine being at bat playing baseball when a fast pitch is thrown, and you are busy thinking about the mechanics of your swing.
Remind yourself to trust your subconscious. If you play by feel, you will be able to do this. Buddy Bell, a former Rangers third baseman, if he received a 100 mph fast ball, his reaction time was equivalent to a blink of the eye.
